BOTOX/Dysport

January 27th, 2012

BOTOX and Dysport are both viable options if you are considering a cosmetic treatment to smooth lines and revitalize the look of your skin. BOTOX and Dysport work especially well in reducing forehead lines, crow’s feet and frown creases.

Both BOTOX and Dysport are botulinum toxins that block communication between nerve endings and muscles, relaxing muscle contractions and resulting in a smoother appearance to the skin. Dysport was approved by the FDA in 2009, and as a relative newcomer in the US compared to BOTOX, it remains to be seen to what extent the two differ.

A recent study published in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery indicated that Dysport may be more effective in preventing crow’s feet that occur while smiling. The study found no differences between the effects of BOTOX and Dysport on crow’s feet when facial muscles were at rest. Some patients say that Dysport works faster, taking about 1 to 3 days compared to 3 to 7 for BOTOX. Some people think that BOTOX works better for creases between the eyes. Whichever treatment you prefer, you will be most likely to get the best results by choosing a cosmetic surgeon who has experience with BOTOX and Dysport injections. The experienced cosmetic surgeon Daria Hamrah offers both BOTOX and Dysport in northern Virginia.

To restore your facial appearance using BOTOX or Dysport in northern Virginia, please contact the skilled Dr. Hamrah at NOVA SurgiCare, PC today.

Choosing the Right Plastic Surgeon

January 25th, 2012

Plastic surgery is a very personal and serious choice. In the early stages of your decision-making process, nothing is more important than choosing the right plastic surgeon.

Your evaluation of any plastic surgeon should start with a close look at the surgeon’s background and experience. Board-certification is an important requirement. Plastic surgeons who have been board-certified have received special training and passed examinations that have demonstrated their competency in specific surgical techniques.

In addition to a good technical background, the right plastic surgeon will also be dedicated to patient education and safety. If a surgeon doesn’t give you straight answers during a consultation, take this as a red flag. A good plastic surgeon will carefully listen to your cosmetic goals and give you an honest assessment of what can be accomplished in your case.

Northern Virginia plastic surgeon Dr. Daria Hamrah is double board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and by the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. For the past 10 years, he has been actively engaged in the oral and maxillofacial surgery field, and his entire professional and educational experience has been focused on cosmetic and reconstructive procedures for the head and neck.

If you are interested in facial plastic surgery, we invite you to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Hamrah today to find out what makes NOVA SurgiCare unique. We can answer any questions you have about our procedures and help you make an informed decision about treatment.

Choosing a Cosmetic Surgeon

December 6th, 2011

Choosing a cosmetic surgeon is an important decision. Your choice should involve consideration of the cosmetic surgeon’s credentials, experience and candidness. Prepare for a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon by planning questions ahead of time. The cosmetic surgeon’s answers to your questions can both tell you about the surgeon’s qualifications and give you a sense of your rapport with the cosmetic surgeon. A surgeon should answer your questions willingly and address all of your concerns.

In a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon, ask questions that will help you determine the following about the surgeon:

  • Credentials, including medical license, board certification, education, training and experience. Some cosmetic surgeons refine their expertise in an area by fulfilling a fellowship. You may want to ask if the surgeon has completed a fellowship relevant to your procedure.
  • Level of experience with the specific procedure you are pursuing. Ask your cosmetic surgeon how many times he or she has performed the surgery you are interested in. You can ask to see any before and after photos the cosmetic surgeon may have.
  • Concern for safety and use of state-of-the-art technology. Using up-to-date technology enables a cosmetic surgeon to minimize risks and incisions. A surgeon who invests in the latest technology is more likely to be concerned with achieving the best results.

Good cosmetic surgeons can demonstrate competency through experience and education. Do not hesitate to compare several cosmetic surgeons in your search.

If you are considering cosmetic surgeons in northern Virginia, please contact the qualified and experienced Dr. Daria Hamrah today to schedule a consultation.

Juvederm

November 16th, 2011

Juvederm reduces the signs of aging by replenishing your skin’s hyaluronic acid. This acid is abundant in our faces during youth, but decreases with age. Hyaluronic acid maintains facial volume because it absorbs water, in essence acting like a moisturizer. As the levels of acid dwindle, skin volume and structure is diminished, causing wrinkles and folds in your face.

Juvederm can improve the appearance of many different signs of aging, including:

  • Puffy, dark bags underneath the eyes
  • Smile lines
  • Marionette lines
  • Vertical lines above your mouth

Juvederm has an advantage over other dermal fillers because it contains hyaluronic acid. During a Juvederm treatment, your doctor will use a fine-gauge needle to inject the smooth gel underneath the outer layer of your skin. The gel will instantly restore structure and add volume to your face. The injection will also boost hyaluronic acid levels, allowing your skin to more effectively absorb moisture. The results from Juvederm can last up to 6 months depending on the area that is injected.

There are several different facial fillers, and a qualified healthcare professional can determine which one is the best solution for you. Dr. Daria Hamrah understands both the outward and underlying components of the face, and after a consultation with you, Dr. Hamrah can help you decide if Juvederm is the best way for you to achieve a refreshed, improved facial appearance.

To schedule a Juvederm consultation in Washington, D.C., please contact Dr. Hamrah at NOVA SurgiCare today.

Radiesse

October 26th, 2011

Injections like Radiesse restore an appealing facial shape without the invasiveness of surgery. More and more people are turning to injections to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and augment areas of soft tissue loss. Dermal fillers like Radiesse have the advantage of producing instant results and requiring minimal recovery time.

Radiesse can be used in several ways to improve facial signs of aging. Radiesse can non-surgically reduce the appearance of:

  • Smile lines
  • Marionette lines/frown lines
  • Chin wrinkles
  • Wrinkles around your mouth
  • Sunken cheeks
  • Hollowing on either side of the chin

There are several types of facial fillers. Radiesse has the advantage of stimulating collagen production. Radiesse contains calcium-based microspheres, which cause your body to produce collagen. Collagen is a protein that makes your skin appear smooth and firm, and the capability of Radiesse to stimulate collagen production means that the result of youthful-looking skin will last up to a year or more.

Radiesse can instantly improve the signs of early aging. Radiesse can also be used in combination with BOTOX for optimum anti-aging results.

For Radiesse in Washington, D.C., please contact the experienced facial cosmetic surgeon Dr. Daria Hamrah at NOVA SurgiCare.

TMD/TMJ Symptoms

September 28th, 2011

Temporomandibular joint disorder, known as TMJ or TMD, can cause excruciating pain and discomfort. The symptoms of TMJ are often overlooked or misdiagnosed because these symptoms can occur in numerous situations. If you are experiencing any of the signs of TMJ, you should consider consulting a dentist for diagnosis. A medical doctor may not see that the symptoms are TMJ related.

The symptoms of TMJ include:

  • Headaches
  • Pain around your ears, neck and shoulders
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Clicking or popping noises in your jaw
  • Jaw locking in an opened or closed position
  • Ear ringing or humming
  • Jaw and teeth pain
  • Facial swelling
  • Earaches

Once being diagnosed with TMJ by a dentist, you should seek treatment from an oral surgeon. A surgeon specializing in oral surgery has the advantage of treating the causes of TMJ, instead of treating the symptoms only. Non-surgical treatments can alleviate TMJ pain, but your joint may need surgical repairs to reduce TMJ symptoms in the long term.  An oral surgeon can treat TMJ disorders with corrective jaw surgery or by repairing a jaw that has undergone trauma with reconstructive jaw surgery.

For skilled TMJ treatment in Washington, D.C., please contact NOVA SurgiCare today.

Are my Teeth Causing my Headache?

August 4th, 2011

Teeth grinding can cause headaches, but often the grinding is a sign of an underlying issue of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ). The TMJ connects your jawbone to your skull, and sometimes this joint is displaced or has undergone trauma, in which case it will produce a variety of uncomfortable symptoms. One symptom of TMJ is tooth pain that may occur along with a headache.

Headaches can result when the TMJ is subjected to excessive pressure. This pressure can be caused by:

  • Tooth grinding
  • Jaw clenching
  • Misaligned bite

Stress can cause you to grind your teeth or clench your jaw while you sleep. These behaviors will put pressure on the TMJ, as well as the muscles and nerves surrounding the joint. The pressure results in a headache. A bad bite, such as an overbite, can cause TMJ tension as well.

Persistent and severe cases of TMJ may benefit from oral and maxillofacial surgery to reposition or repair the jaw.

Constant headaches could also be a sign that you need wisdom teeth extraction. Impacted wisdom teeth will continue to grow in the wrong direction, and the movement caused by the incorrect direction of growth can result in jaw pain and headaches.

An experienced oral surgeon in Washington, D.C., Dr. Daria Hamrah can answer all of your questions about TMJ and tooth-related headaches. Please contact NOVA SurgiCare today to schedule a consultation.

What to Ask During your Nose Surgery Consultation

May 23rd, 2011

A rhinoplasty or “nose job” is a popular and effective surgery to re-contour the shape and size of your nose. Before undergoing surgery, you should work closely with your Maryland cosmetic surgeon and discuss your cosmetic goals, concerns and desired outcome.

Your Maryland cosmetic surgeon should ask you detailed questions about your ability to breathe, your allergies, and any facial trauma that you may have sustained. You should also be given a through external and internal nasal exam.

For best results, you should make sure that you are working with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has plenty of experience in performing this procedure. Meet with a number of potential surgeons until you find that one who you feel comfortable with. Here are a few questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  • Are you board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery or by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
  • How many rhinoplasty surgeries have you performed?
  • What is your revision policy, should I need one? (And do you perform revision rhinoplasties or must I go elsewhere?)
  • Do you have Before and After photographs that I can look at?
  • Can you give me names of some patients with whom I can speak?

If you are interested in rhinoplasty surgery and you live in the Maryland area, please contact the Nova Surgicare, PC Center for Oral and Facial Rejuvenation today for more information about this procedure.
